The aviation medical exam: what to expect?
To become a commercial pilot, candidates must receive Class I and Class II medical fitness certificates. Obtaining a Class II certificate is necessary before enrolling in a flying school, although obtaining a Class I certificate can be done during the training.
Any applicant for any class of medical assessment must be free of any congenital or acquired abnormality; any active, latent, acute or chronic disability; any wound, injury, or sequelae from surgery; any effect or side-effect of any prescribed or non-prescribed therapeutic, diagnostic, or preventive medication taken; and any other condition that would entail a degree of functional incapacity that would likely interfere with the safe operation of an aircraft or with the safe peregrination of an aircraft.
Second class medical certificate
Only General Aviation pilots (those who fly as a hobby) are needed to get a second class medical certificate. The certificate is less restricted because the bearer is not engaged in commercial activities; nonetheless, the holder of the medical certificate must be mentally and physically healthy to safely execute the rights of the appropriate license.
First class medical certificate
All pilots who work in commercial aircraft must have a first-class medical certificate. This certificate adheres to the strictest medical guidelines. A medical certificate holder must be mentally and physically capable of safely exercising the privileges of the appropriate license.
Eyesight, ear, psychical examination, electrocardiogram (ECG), lung function, cholesterol blood, hemoglobin blood, chest X-ray, urine, and time of validity are all required for a first-class medical certificate. ECG can reveal problems with cardiac rhythm or impulse conduction, and it can also reveal a shortage of blood flow to the heart muscle. For PART-FCL Class 1, a chest X-ray investigation is not necessary, although it may be required if clinical or epidemiological reasons warrant it. The Lung Function Test measures your capacity to take deep breaths and evacuate air from your lungs. A physical examination is a general check to ensure that everything is in working order. The lungs, heart, blood pressure, stomach, limbs, and neurological system will all be covered.
Renewal
The standards for medical fitness alter from time to time. Every year, every commercial pilot license holder is required to undergo a Class-1 medical examination. A commander with an airline transport pilot’s license (ATPL) and all pilots over the age of 40 are required to undergo medical examinations every two years.
For the most part, the aviation medical test is a breeze. Waiting for the waiver procedure to be completed might be aggravating for some. But this is the part that must be passed by each pilot.
